Saturday started a little late, but we crammed a lot into that day. It had stopped snowing the night before, the sun was out, and it looked to be a nice, albeit cold, day.
Being in the red light district, we had some interesting neighbors - the Hemp Museum next door being one of them:
There was an organic market a couple of blocks from our apartment where Pete got his first taste of pickled herring. I had a small sample - it was nasty. However, Pete liked it so much he got a second serving:
Glenn opted for a banana crepe, and I chose a lamb burger:
We made our way to the museum area and passed what had to be the world's smallest 4-wheel car. Pete picked up a copy of Harry Potter in Dutch, and I found yet another picturesque bridge over a canal (there are so many of these bridge/canal scenes that they start to blend together after a while):
I thought these were amusing in a juvenile way. Amsterdam is dotted with these traffic control poles. The "xxx" is part of the Amsterdam city flag:
We passed Rembrandt plaza, more canal scenes, and the Rembrandt museum on our way to the Van Gogh Museum:
Amsterdam is dotted with lots of open air markets. After our 3 hour tour of the Van Gogh museum, we made our way to Albert Cuyp, the largest of these markets. But first, I had to check out a typical Dutch bike shop - where the bikes were very utilitarian, and the place smelled of grease and gasoline:
Dinner that night was at a fancy Thai restaurant. This is their version of pad Thai. The noodles and other goodies are wrapped inside the egg omelet:
After dinner, we stopped by a couple of beer bars that came highly recommended. Beer Temple, billed as the first American beer bar in Europe, featured 30 beers on draft and 60 more in bottles - plus they had European beers brewed in the style of American beers:
´t Arendsnest was the sister bar to Beer Temple and featured Dutch beers - over 350 of them. We ended the night here and met some interesting locals and tourists, and sampled a nice 5 year old genever:
