Amsterdam - day 1

Here's the deal - Glenn found out about a bar in Amsterdam that served 300+ beers. Pete said we should check it out. I said that I had a ton of frequent flyer miles and was also game. All that was left was to figure out a time to go.

Well, that time was last week. The three of us spent 4 nights in Amsterdam, in an apartment built in the 1600's, just inside the red light district. I have a lot of pictures, so I thought I'd post them by day.

Day 1: We took a flight from Austin Thursday afternoon (Feb 2nd) and arrived in Amsterdam Friday around noon. The forecast was for days in the mid 20's and nights in the teens. However, it seemed much colder when we landed:

We also encountered a bit of snow (little did we know at the time that much of Europe was being hit with a severe winter storm):

We made our way to the train station and arrived at our apartment fairly quickly. Clearing customs in Amsterdam, btw, was really easy and hassle-free. Here's the view from our living room window (those would be swans, sea gulls and Mallards below):

And from inside:

After dropping off our bags, we made our way to the History Museum to gleam a little more knowledge about our host city:

This was in the lobby of the museum. Honestly, I'm not sure about the outfit on the woman with the animal ear hat. If you look closely, you may notice that her jeans had cut-outs to show off her quads:

The walk back to the apartment was rather nice. The great thing about snow is that it makes everything look like a postcard. Not that the city wasn't picturesque to begin with:

The city is built on land that had to be drained, so the soil is not the best. Deep piles need to be sunk to support buildings. Sometimes the supports sink, and the building leans. A builder we encountered in a cafe mentioned that the cost to level these buildings is rather high, so they sometimes they just level the floors instead:

That evening we sampled the local brews at a few pubs. Here are pictures of the first 2. The 3rd one was the best, and it also had good food, but I forgot to take a picture. I will note that my face got redder as the night wore on:
