Memorial weekend

Seems wrong that I have to work on Memorial Day weekend. So be it. At least I snuck in a couple of rides and a few drinks.

Sunday morning Spicewood Springs ride with Michael and Teddy. Dustin rode in from Steiner and joined us for a few miles.

Nothing like a cheese plate downtown afterward to cleanse the palette. Thank you guys for buying a round.

Monday morning in-town ride with Pete, Jill, Jane and Dave. The Airport bridge by Hwy 71 is a personal favorite.

With Pete along, there's a chance any ride will turn into a knowledge ride. Today, it was the Bethany Cemetery in East Austin, a black cemetery that dates back to the 1800's. Apparently, it was neglected and overgrown for ages, but has since been cleaned up. Pretty cool.

a.k.a the diabetes ride

Ron came in from Houston this past weekend to ride the Tour de Cure with me. The TdC is a benefit ride for the American Diabetes Association. It's a good cause. San Antonio to Austin in 2 days, with an overnight stop at Texas State University in San Marcus Saturday night.

We left my house at 4:15AM, so we could catch the 5:AM bus to San Antonio. The ride actually starts at Retama Park in Selma (I saw REM there years ago), so the bus ride was only an hour long - which meant we had a 90 minute wait until the ride started.

Plenty of time for a lot of coffee, breakfast tacos, and face painting. The ride got off to a stormy start - windy, with a light rain. Luckily, the headwind only lasted the first 35 miles or so. Then the sun came out. Oh, the glorious sun.

Actually, it wasn't a bad first day. I only rode 55 miles, so I had time to shower and eat before Ron finished his 85 miles. One of Ron's former co-workers met us at the finish, and we floated the San Marcus river for a couple of hours. Arguably, the best part of the trip - and the cheapest entertainment you'll find - 7 bucks for a tube rental, including shuttle bus rides. After dinner, we went to town looking for margaritas. We asked a student reading outside some cafe. He enthusiastically directed us to a bar across the street - claiming they had the best margaritas in town. They weren't that great, but they were only $2.

The 2nd day, I opted for the 25 mile direct route back to Austin. We started at 7:50, and I was back in Austin around 9:00.

Again, that gave me time to eat, go home, and shower before going back to meet Ron for more margaritas. Seemed to be the theme for the weekend.

B2W day

Happy bike to work day. I would have liked to say I biked to work today, but sadly, that wasn't so. Given the humidity outside and lack of showers at work, the people I share a team room with are probably happy I left the bike at home.

However, I am happy to report our new jerseys arrived yesterday. I like them.

M-Day

Celebrated Mother's Day in Houston this past weekend. Besides visiting the family and eating a lot of good food, I also had a chance to catch up with Ron, Ann and Jeff at Escalante's. I hadn't seen Ann and Jeff since their wedding in California 18 months ago. Married life agrees with them. And it looks like Ron's getting married next February.

I also had a chance to see The Back-up Plan recently. It's the new JLo film. All I have to say is that it is one LONG-ass film. I didn't think it would ever end. The Losers, on the other had, kicked ass.

And speaking of lame, have you seen this week's Target ad? Here's a perfect example of political correctness gone awry: an Asian looking dad, a Caucasian mom in a wheelchair, and a little kid whose force to play ball with himself (complete with requisite grass-stained knees). Btw, I don't believe their tent meets ADA guidelines.

On a lighter note, if you've never had the chocolate cream cheese cup cakes from the Upper Crust Bakery, you really have been missing out. If, on the other hand, you prefer to make your own cup cakes, here's a worthy recipe.
